Photo List Fuzhou: Ancient craft reimagined

Beijing, March 14 (Youth.cn) - On March 13, 2025, in the workshop of the Taigu Lacquer Art Space Museum of Bodiless Lacquerware in Zhuqi Township, Minhou County, Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, over a dozen young lacquer artisans were hard at work. The exhibition hall showcased a vibrant array of lacquerware, including furniture, tea sets, and decorative items, creating a kaleidoscopic space of cultural creativity.

Natural lacquer, also known as raw lacquer, is a pure organic coating extracted from lacquer trees. As the primary material for bodiless lacquerware, it boasts properties such as corrosion resistance, acid and alkali resistance, moisture-proofing, and high-temperature tolerance. The intricate lacquer-making process involves 25 steps, including priming, surface coating, sanding, lacquering, drying in humidity-controlled rooms, air-drying, polishing, re-lacquering, and final polishing.

Fuzhou, a hub for lacquer artistry in China, is attracting a growing number of young talents dedicated to preserving this ancient craft. Today, the Taigu Lacquer Art Space Museum operates as a 5G smart factory integrating bodiless lacquerware production, traditional craftsmanship, modern design, research and development, cultural innovation, new media, and educational tourism. While preserving traditional techniques, the museum continues to innovate, infusing new vitality into this ancient craft and propelling it into the modern spotlight. Photo/CFP
