The week-long MusicAcoustica 2006 raised its golden curtain on Monday at Beijing's Central Conservatory of Music.
Claimed as the biggest electronic music fest in Asia, the event will round up cutting-edge sound artists from over 30 countries, to create a better understanding of emerging music and showcase the latest developments in the field.
Several lectures on electronic music composition and related technologies are to be held throughout the week, including master classes by famous composer Leigh Landy and "Essentials of Music Technology" writer Mark Ballora.
This year the theme of the annual festival is "language," which Zhang Xiaofu, Executive President of the event, explained as the "foundation of music." He said, "Every period of time has its own language. Electronic music, which was born in the Information Age, is a symbolic language for this modern time."
Composer Leigh Landy, who also has a research chair at De Montfort University in the UK, explained further: "Language is essential for us to appreciate the music. For China, there are many words that need to be created for this field, and this event will help us find a way."
But this year's event is expected to do more than just create new terminology for China's electronic music. Representatives from music conservatories all over China will attend forums held during the event and discuss electronic music development in the country.
Hu Nan, a music teacher from Northeastern University in Liaoning province, said, "Electronic music is different from other genres of music, because it involves a lot of new techniques. I hope by attending this event I can learn some new technology and use it in my teaching."
Monday's opening ceremony was wrapped up with a gala multimedia concert. It also kicked off a series of night concerts presented by big names in the current electronic music world scene.
The event runs from October 23 to 28. |
