U.S. special envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell arrived in Cairo late July 26 in an effort to promote peace process in the Middle East, according to a source at Cairo Airport.
An informed source told Xinhua that Mitchell is due to meet Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Monday morning.
Media reports said that Mitchell's surprise visit to Cairo on Sunday is at the request of the Egyptian president.
Egypt has been exerting intensified efforts to push the Middle East peace process as it hosted several rounds of reconciliation negotiations between the Palestinian rivals.
Mitchell's visit to Egypt came after his visits to Syria and Israel in which he met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
Over the past few months, the U.S. government has been leading the international community in urging Israel to totally freeze construction in West Bank settlements and East Jerusalem. However, Netanyahu's administration has so far refused to yield to that demand, giving rise to worries about the close relations between the two allies.
