Brown calls for more engagement of fast-growing developing countries

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called for more engagement of the fast-growing developing countries to address economic crisis and environment issues.

Brown made the remarks at a briefing at the Downing Street No. 10 on the eve of the G8 summit, saying that the G8 summit to be held in Italy is a very important event and also a platform for the Copenhagen conference in December.

Brown said his priority for the upcoming G8 summit included economy, climate change, security and poverty alleviation.

"This is a second wake-up call for us. We have to deal with the challenge of resuming growth in the world economy," he added.

"As I said when I chaired the G20 summit, the world economic problems and challenges require more than simply eight countries to get together,"

Brown said, answering a question from Xinhua.

When discussing major economic issues and addressing climate change, "we need bigger group of countries around the table. We have to recognize growing and important contribution made by China, Brazil, India, South Africa..."he added.

As this G8 summit brings people together again, "we want to listen to the views of all countries as we made decision," Brown said.

"We welcome the engagement of China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico," he said.

Leaders of the eight industrialized nations, which groups the United States, Japan, Russia, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Canada, are slated for a three-day summit in L'Aquila, Italy, beginning on July 8.
