Honduras police report 42 arrests for defying curfew

http://en.youth.cn   2009-07-02 16:15:00

At least 42 people have been arrested for defying the nation's curfew, part of martial law that began on June 28 night, police spokesman German Rivera told media on July 1.

Tegucigalpa police arrested 39 people and police in Talanga, northeast of the capital, arrested the remaining three, Rivera said.

Media had earlier reported at least 270 arrests, across the nation for all incidents the followed Sunday's military coup. Two people have died in the capital protesting the government of Roberto Micheletti, who took over the presidency on Sunday afternoon after Manuel Zelaya was seized by soldiers and forced onto a plane to Costa Rica in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Rivera said that the Supreme Courts of Justice and Tegucigalpa broadcaster Radio America had both suffered attacks from grenades that did not explode.

Rallies both for and against Zelaya are taking place across the nation on Wednesday, but there have been no reports of violence. Thousands of Zelaya supporters have taken to the streets and clashed with soldiers and police who are trying to restore order.

On June 30, authorities renewed the martial law declaration, which imposes a curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
