Turkey became the third largest overseas project contractor with the value of projects undertaken by Turkish contractors abroad reaching 81.7 billion U.S. dollars in the last five years, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.
Turkey is currently one of the top three countries in the construction sector at international level, Turkish State Minister Kursad Tuzmen said Thursday at a ceremony to award the 23 Turkish contractors listed among the "Top 225 International Contractors."
The annual value of projects undertaken by Turkish contractors abroad reached 23.6 billion dollars in 2008 alone, according to the report.
"This situation puts Turkey in the third place behind China and the U.S.," Tuzmen was quoted as saying.
The report said Russia, Libya and Turkmenistan are top three countries where Turkish contractors undertake most of their overseas projects in the past five years.
Russia ranks the first with a total value of 15.9 billion dollars, it said.
Meanwhile, Ireland, Sudan, Bulgaria and Iran have become new markets for Turkish contractors in the period between 2003 and 2008, it added. |
