South Korean President Moon Jae-in's approval rating declined amid rising geopolitical risks on the Korean Peninsula, a survey showed Thursday.

According to the Realmeter poll, Moon gained 73.4 percent of support this week, down 0.5 percentage points from the previous week.

It was based on a survey of 1,521 voters conducted from Monday to Wednesday. It had 2.5 percentage points in margin of error with a 95 percent confidence level.

The pollster cited geopolitical risks on the peninsula, caused by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s missile launch, as the negative factor for President Moon.

Controversy over Moon's nomination of a cabinet member and a constitutional court justice also negatively affected Moon's support scores.

Tensions re-escalated on the peninsula after the DPRK's launch on Tuesday of an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), called Hwasong-12, which passed over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Support for Moon's ruling Democratic Party rose 0.4 percentage points over the week to 52.2 percent this week.

It was followed by the main opposition Liberty Korea Party, which garnered 16.8 percent in approval scores.

The minor conservative Righteous Party and the centrist People's Party won 6.5 percent and 6.2 percent respectively in approval rating, while the minor progressive Justice Party earned 6.0 percent of support.
