【#Tech24H】Through collaboration between the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yunnan University, and other domestic and international institutions, a fossil of a primitive lungfish dating back approximately 410 million years was discovered in the Lower Devonian strata of Zhaotong, Yunnan. It has been named “Yunnanosteus”. This fossil represents the first three-dimensionally preserved lungfish skull from the Pragian stage of the Devonian period. Although the skull measures only 25 millimeters in length, it contains rich evolutionary information. The discovery bridges the “evolutionary gap” between the most primitive lungfish and more advanced lungfish species, providing crucial physical evidence for deciphering the evolutionary code of early lungfish.
