【#Tech24H】Using the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists from the University of Chicago have discovered a peculiar lemon-shaped exoplanet, PSR J2322-2650b. The planet appears deep red, with graphite clouds floating in its atmosphere, making it one of the most unusual exoplanets known to date. Its “year” lasts only about 7.8 hours, and even the coldest regions on its surface reach temperatures as high as approximately 650 Celsius. Unlike most giant planets, its atmospheric winds blow in the opposite direction to the planet’s rotation. The planet’s atmosphere is rich in carbon molecules, and its extremely high surface temperatures make it vastly different from any known planet, posing a challenge to existing theories of planetary formation.
