Beijing, April 21 (Youth.cn) - On the evening of April 19, 2025, in Chongqing, teachers of the "Sunday English class" at Southwest University were preparing lessons in the classroom. Originally initiated and founded in 1981 by retired engineer Chen Lingfeng and his wife from Chongqing 208 Geological Team, the program began as an English self-study group. As participation gradually increased, it evolved into a systematic English teaching program. In 2010, Southwest University's School of Foreign Languages officially took over the voluntary teaching responsibilities and established the Magnolia Volunteer Service Group to manage the program, which continues to this day.
To date, the "Sunday English class" has served over 5,500 teenage students and nearly 4,100 adult learners from various professions over its 44-year history. More than 2,300 student volunteers and 190 faculty volunteers from Southwest University have successively taught in the program. Photo/CFP
