Beijing, February 12 (Youth.cn) - On February 10, 2025, in Dalian City of Liaoning Province, as night fell on Lunar January 13th, fishermen in Wangjiadao Town, Zhuanghe City, carried handmade sea lanterns and offerings to the coastline. Guided by tidal patterns and wind direction, they meticulously arranged the lanterns and symbolic fruits along the shore. Families then knelt facing the sea in order of seniority, paying homage to the Sea Goddess to express gratitude and seek blessings. Illuminated lanterns were gently released into the waves, carrying hopes for favorable weather, safe voyages, and abundant harvests in the new year.
This ritual, known as "releasing sea lanterns," is a centuries-old tradition among fishermen in southern Liaoning. For nearly 300 years, communities have honored the Sea Goddess to pray for safety at sea and bountiful catches. The lanterns, often crafted into intricate boat shapes, reflect both the aspirations and ingenuity of the fishing families. Each design symbolizes wishes for prosperity, harmony, and resilience. In 2015, the practice was officially inscribed into Liaoning Province's Intangible Cultural Heritage List, recognizing its cultural and historical significance. Photo/CFP
