Beijing, February 11 (Youth.cn) - On February 10, 2025, the 13th day of the first month of the traditional Chinese calendar, the intangible cultural heritage "Wangmantian Fish Lanterns" comes alive in the Wangmantian Village, Xitou Town, Shexian County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province. Villagers parade through the ancient Huizhou settlement with handmade fish lanterns, illuminating the night sky with blessings of "peace, prosperity, and abundance (a homophone for 'fish' in Chinese) year after year," celebrating the upcoming Lantern Festival.
Dating back over six centuries, the Wangmantian Fish Lantern is a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage of Anhui. From the 13th to the 16th days of the first month of the traditional Chinese calendar each year, villagers perform the playful fish lantern dance, praying for continuous prosperity ("abundance year after year," linked to the word for "fish" in Chinese) and thriving descendants - a nod to the fish's symbolism of fertility.
