【#Tech24H】According to NASA’s official website and IBM Research’s official socialmedia channels, the two institutions announced the open-source release of the NASA-IBM LunarFoundation Model. Model weights and code are available to researchers worldwide for download, finetuning, and experimentation. The model draws on approximately 2 million lunar image tiles, including more than 1 million narrowangle camera images at 1meter resolution and nearly 964,000 multispectral images at 100meter resolution. It integrates terrain and remotesensing data from missions including GRAIL, Lunar Prospector, and JAXA’s SELENE from Japan. This is one of the first publicly available intelligent analysis tools built specifically for lunar science. It aims to turn decades of scattered lunar observation data into reusable tools for crater mapping, volcanic landform identification, and assessment of polar waterice potential. The model carries great significance for lunar resource exploration. Meanwhile, for future safe spacecraft landings and geological understanding of landing sites, the new model can help rapidly extract and classify craters and lower the workload of manual interpretation.
