Photo List Fastest Known Star in the Milky Way Discovered

【#Tech24H】An international team of astronomers has discovered the fastest-moving star currently known in the Milky Way. Designated S301, the star orbits Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, at a peak speed of 25,000 kilometers per second, exceeding 8% of the speed of light. Sagittarius A* has a mass roughly 4 million times that of the Sun, and S301 completes one full orbit around it in just 8.7 years. Its orbit brings it extremely close to Sagittarius A*, with its next close approach expected in 2031. By continuously monitoring its orbital changes, scientists hope to directly measure the spin of Sagittarius A* for the first time, offering a significant opportunity to test Einstein’s theory of general relativity.  [ By Zhang Liyan | Tang Ruohan ]
