【#Tech24H】The OpenAI UK data center project, “Stargate UK”, which was led by tech giants such as Nvidia and Microsoft and originally planned to break ground in northeastern England in the first quarter of 2026, has been put on indefinite hold. Although OpenAI had just completed a record-breaking $122 billion funding round last month, the decision to indefinitely suspend the Stargate UK project, without announcing a restart timeline, marks the latest shift in the company’s investment strategy. Previously, OpenAI and its partners, including Oracle and SoftBank, initially claimed that Stargate was a $500 billion initiative to build large-scale AI computing facilities around the world. OpenAI has attributed the delay to high energy costs and an uncertain regulatory environment. Concerns over the UK government’s AI policies, a controversial reform that has been postponed in particular, have also contributed to the postponement.
