Although OpenAI had just completed a record-breaking $122 billion funding round last month, the decision to indefinitely suspend the Stargate UK project, without announcing a restart timeline, marks the latest shift in the company’s investment strategy. Previously, OpenAI and its partners, including Oracle and SoftBank, initially claimed that Stargate was a $500 billion initiative to build large-scale AI computing facilities around the world. OpenAI has attributed the delay to high energy costs and an uncertain regulatory environment. Concerns over the UK government’s AI policies, a controversial reform that has been postponed in particular, have also contributed to the postponement.
