Nickel-Rich Alloys Are Discovered in Natural Diamond for the First Time
【Tech 24H】An international team of scientists, including researchers from the Hebrew University, the University of Nevada, and the University of Cambridge, has discovered a naturally occurring nickel-rich alloy in diamonds from South Africa’s Voorspoed mine. For decades, both theoretical and experimental studies suggested that nickel-rich alloys should stably exist at depths of 250-300 km in the Earth’s mantle, but natural samples directly confirming this prediction are rare. These diamonds, formed at depths of 280-470 km below the surface, provide direct validation for the long-speculated redox model of the mantle.
