Photo List Robotic Hand Gains Human-Like Tactile Sensitivity

【#Tech24H】A team at Stanford University has developed a system called UMI-FT. They installed a coin-sized six-dimensional force/torque sensor, named CoinFT, on each finger of a handheld data collection device (UMI). The sensor detects all six directional forces and torques applied to each finger. Weighing only 2 grams and measuring 20 mm in diameter and 3 mm in thickness, it enables the robot to sense all forces acting on its fingers in real time as it performs tasks such as inserting a light bulb into a socket. The robot can adjust its grip, loosening or tightening, with a delicacy almost matching that of a human hand. The CoinFT sensor costs only $10, can be calibrated to the same standard as traditional industrial force sensors, and safely withstands large impact forces without damage. [ By Zhang Liyan | Tang Ruohan ]
