This roadmap focuses on expanding capacity, enhancing performance, and optimizing power consumption for Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), precisely addressing the continuously surging demand for massive data storage in AI. According to this roadmap, Western Digital's highest-capacity 40TB UltraSMR ePMR hard drive is slated for mass production in the second half of 2026. Utilizing energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording (ePMR) technology and incorporating UltraSMR (Ultra Shingled Magnetic Recording) enhancements, this drive represents the current capacity pinnacle of ePMR technology.
