August 6 marked the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing. The tragedy caused by the bombing cannot be denied, and the principle of peace should be remembered.
However, without examining the root causes of the war from its historical origins, this memory will remain incomplete. Atsushi Koketsu, professor emeritus at Yamaguchi University, noted: "Hiroshima's Memorial Cenotaph bears the epitaph 'please rest in peace, for [we/they] shall not repeat the error.' It does not specify whose error it was. Japan always discusses the war in a subjectless manner, transforming responsibility into abstract lessons."
