Beijing, May 22 (Youth.cn) - On May 19, 2025, Deqing’s freshwater pearl composite farming system was officially designated as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This marks China’s first world-class agricultural heritage in aquaculture. The system, rooted in a symbiotic relationship between fish and mussels, utilizes locally developed nucleus-insertion pearl cultivation techniques. It supports a diverse aquatic ecosystem and offers a sustainable model for fisheries in floodplain regions worldwide. Photo/CFP
