Beijing, May 16 (Youth.cn) - On May 15, 2025, a set of Buddhist cliff carvings was newly discovered near a rock shelter in Shicha Gully, north of Shicao Village, Yangxing Township, Yangqu County, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. The discovery was made during a recent field survey led by associate professor Wang Wei from the Buddhist archaeology team of Shanxi University’s School of Archaeology and Museology.
The carvings, created on a relatively vertical and smooth cliff face, feature a single niche containing a seated Buddha in a cross-legged meditation posture. Based on stylistic analysis, associate professor Wang Wei estimates that the carvings date back to the Northern Qi to Sui Dynasties (late 6th century to early 7th century CE). Photo/CFP
