Photo List Boat-shaped houses: "living fossils" of traditional Li ethnic dwellings

Beijing, May 13 (Youth.cn) On May 12, 2025, in Dongfang City, Hainan Province, Fu Dayin, an inheritor of the Li ethnic boat-shaped house construction techniques, was using white rattan to bind the framework of a boat-shaped house. These houses, named for their resemblance to covered boats in shape and ship cabins internally, are traditional dwellings of the Li ethnic group. The 87 boat-shaped houses in Baicha Village, Dongfang City, remain well-preserved, forming the only intact ancient Li boat-shaped house village in China. In 2008, the "Construction Techniques of Li Boat-Shaped Houses" were listed in the second batch of national-level intangible cultural heritage. In recent years, Hainan has intensified efforts to pass down these techniques and protect the cultural heritage of Baicha Villages boat-shaped houses. Photo/CFP
