Beijing, April 14 (Youth.cn) - On April 11, 2025, Shanghai unveiled its inaugural "City Cat Island," a pioneering urban sanctuary for stray cats, now open to the public. The project, which began with the relocation of facilities from Laogang Town in Pudong in February 2025, has culminated in the official launch of the new site in Gucun, Baoshan District. With the support of animal welfare advocates, over 200 cats have already been relocated to this innovative space.
The "City Cat Island" serves dual purposes: it is Shanghai’s first community governance education center focused on stray cat management and a public education base promoting scientific approaches to feline care. Designed as both a refuge and a learning hub, the facility features interactive exhibits, adoption services, and workshops on responsible pet ownership. Its opening reflects Shanghai’s progressive efforts to harmonize urban living with animal welfare, fostering compassion and sustainability in city planning. Photo/CFP
