Around 100 documentary producers, leading directors and journalists from eight South Asia countries are in Nepali capital Kathmandu to participate in the first South Asian Interactive Documentary Film Festival taking place here on December 27-30.

The participant are from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Talking to myrepublica.com, Coordinator of the festival, Sara Tareen said, "24 documentaries from all eight member countries of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation will be presented over four days of the festival and will focus on conflict, peace, people and culture."

Along with the screenings, Tareen informed, "The festival will also double as an open house for critical reviews and discussions on various papers to be presented by leading directors."

"The festival organized by South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) seeks to provide a multi cultural platform of South Asian documentary film makers for quality production and viewership," said Secretary General SAFMA, Imtiaz Alam, "It will help understand each other and will create better awareness among South Asian people and help build a fraternity of South Asian documentary makers."

The festival which was slated to be held in Mumbai, India, earlier this month has been brought to Kathmandu because of Mumbai attacks.

"The next SAFMA Documentary Festival however will be held in Mumbai in 2009," said Alam.
