German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for a greater readiness for compromise on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday before meeting him tomorrow.

"We should not let the window of opportunity shut" and the two-state solution should be implemented, Merkel said in a interview with German television N24.

"The time is absolutely right, and let us do everything to use it," said Merkel.

Netanyahu was on a four-day European trip and held a meeting with U.S. envoy George Mitchell earlier Wednesday in London, where the two men reported "progress" towards a resumption of peace talks with the Palestinians, according to the local media reports.

This is the first official visit of Netanyahu to Germany after he reelected as prime minister in March. He arrived in Berlin on Wednesday and met German President Horst Koehler at his official residence. On Thursday, he will meet German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier first, then in the afternoon, he will meet Merkel.
