Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled Friday to deliver his official speech to commemorate the Aug. 17 national independence that would mark the commencement of the parliament's initial assembly period for 2009-2010.

The parliament speaker Agung Laksono said that the occasion to hear the president's speech to commemorate the 64th independence day was not regulated in the existing law.

Agung said that it was merely a tradition that has been done by the previous presidents on Aug. 14, the Antara news agency reported on Friday.

The parliament invited the people who have been recognized to demonstrate good deeds in their respective fields, among others regency heads, teachers, students and head of villages.

Following the threat to assassinate the president revealed by the police's anti-terror squad from the recently-arrested terrorist suspects, the police and the military were heightening the security for the president.

They set the highest level of security to safeguard the president who will be sworn in for his second term of presidency in October.

An air force helicopter functioned as a presidential helicopter was besieged at the back of the parliament building in an anticipation of a quick evacuation should anything bad happened to the president.
