Giuseppe Verdi's opera classic "Macbeth" was chosen as the opening performance for the 12th Beijing International Music Festival over the weekend.

As one of the largest-scale annual cultural events in the Chinese capital, this year's festival features 21 classical music performances and presents a range of lectures and free concerts to promote classical music in the city.

Based on Shakespeare's tragedy, the opera "Macbeth" is a four-act work by Italian music great Giuseppe Verdi with an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It tells the story of how a former heroic soldier, Macbeth, succumbs to his lust for power and becomes a tyrant under the influence of his wife and a group of witches.

The opera has appeared in repertories of opera houses worldwide.

Saturday night's performance was the opera's Chinese premiere, and was produced by Finland's Savonlinna Opera Festival, an internationally recognized month-long annual festival. The festival produced a new interpretation of Verdi's Macbeth in 1993, with re-designed sets and costumes and a unique operatic approach.

The Beijing International Music Festival is held annually in October, and has become one of the city's most significant and creative cultural events presenting operas, symphonies, chamber music, musicals, and jazz.
