Chinese spy thriller "The Message" hit local theaters on Tuesday, one day ahead of schedule.

The film is set in Japanese-occupied China in the 1940s, and tells the story of a Japanese spy chief who tries to identify a Chinese agent from a gathered group of suspects.

Previously limited screenings have won rave reviews, however, the film is not recommended for minors due to its cruel interrogation scenes.

"The Message", opening two days ahead of the Chinese National Day, joins a long list of films made to mark the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.

The star-studded film has also been chosen to close the 14th Pusan International Film Festival, to be held in Pusan, South Korea from October 8 to 16.
