Pop singer Madonna's appeal to adopt second Malawian child will be heard next month.

Malawi High Court rejected the singers' appeal earlier this month to adopt three-year-old girl, Mercy James, because of residency requirement, saying that prospective parents be resident in the southern African state for 18 to 24 months.

A three-judge panel from Malawi's Supreme Court of Appeal will convene to hear Madonna's opposition on May 4.

Madonna's Malawian lawyer Alan Chinula said he was hopeful the appeal will succeed.

Madonna is not required to be present during the hearing, which could last up to two weeks and which will be held in closed chambers due to the fact that a minor is involved.
