Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange will star in the HBO movie adaptation of "Grey Gardens," based on the 1975 documentary about a quirky mother and daughter living in squalor despite their privileged background.
Directed by Albert and David Mayslesis, the documentary told the incredible story of how Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' eccentric cousin and aunt lived in squalor in a dilapidated mansion they shared with cats and raccoons on New York's Long Island.
The 1975 documentary also was the inspiration for a popular musical that ran on the New York stage for more than a year, ending this past summer.
The adaptation was originally slated for 2006, though not on HBO. Whether the movie will be released theatrically before it airs on HBO is still to be determined.
