Clinton calls on DPRK to go back to six-party talks

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Wednesday called on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to go back to the six-party talks while attending the APEC meetings here in Singapore.

She said the decision to send US special representative Stephen Bosworth to the DPRK in the near future was made after "extensive consultation with partners within the six-party process" and she reaffirmed the visit is "not for negotiation, but efforts to pave the way for DPRK's return to the six-party talks."

The United States has made the purpose of this visit clear to the DPRK, she said, adding that US "expectations of Pyongyang have not changed and will not change, nor has our commitment to the six-party process."

The United States will use diplomacy and work closely with partners to find a peaceful path to the shared objectives on the Korean Peninsula, she told a news briefing.

She said the recent naval clashes between the DPRK and South Korea would not affect Bosworth's visit and she hoped the situation does not escalate.

The secretary of state also expressed US willingness to see a fair, free and credible election in Myanmar in 2010 and hoped Myanmar's neighbours and the ASEAN will play a role.

Clinton also reiterated US stand on the climate change issue. Hillary Clinton was in Singapore for the APEC Ministerial Meetings.
