Relations between the mainland and Taiwan have stepped into the "right track" with prospects of "peaceful development", said Wang Yi, director of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, in Beijing on July 26.

Wang made the comments in his meeting with Kuomintang honorary chairman Lien Chan.

"However, there are still many problems that need to be solved on the road ahead and many difficulties need to be overcome," Wang said.

He said the two sides should cherish the hard-won current situation, keep improving and developing cross-Straits relations, abide by the major consensuses, continue to increase mutual trust and work actively to solve problems step by step.

Lien Chan said the two sides saw marked progress in cross-Straits relations over the past year, and exchanges and cooperation in economy, culture and education had further deepened. He said the two sides should further enhance exchanges and dialogues to advance the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations.

Lien arrived in Beijing on July 26.
