Brown backs Blair's bid for EU Council presidency

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will support his predecessor Tony Blair as Britain's official candidate for president of the Council of European Union (EU), local media reported on July 15.

Brown's spokesman said if Blair chooses to go for the EU Council presidency, then of course the government would support him.

The spokesman said that "it is the prime minister's view that Tony Blair would be a good candidate for any big international job" and the candidate "we would give our full support (to)."

Britain's Minister for Europe Glenys Kinnock told reporters in Strasbourg, France that the British government is supporting Blair's candidacy for EU president.

"I am not saying there has been any formal confirmation or statement from Tony but it certainly is the government's position," she said.

It is reported that former Spanish prime minister Felipe Gonzalez and Luxembourg's Prime Minister and Finance Minister Jean-Claude Juncker are considered as potential rivals to Blair.
