Brown calls for an increase in economic awareness, engagement

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has urged a greater awareness of the economic recession and called for more engagement on behalf of the fast-growing developing countries to address economic and environmental issues.

Brown made the remarks at a briefing at No. 10 Downing Street on the eve of the Group of Eight (G8) summit. He said that the G8 summit to be held in Italy is a very important event, being also a platform for the UN climate change meeting in Copenhagen this December.

Brown disclosed that his priorities for the upcoming G8 summit included the economy, climate change, security and poverty alleviation.

"Our international agenda has always been economic prosperity, sustainable development through addressing climate change, making sure there is equitable development throughout the world by tackling the problems of poverty and injustice, and, of course security, by dealing with the problems that exist with terrorism and also problems of failed states,” he said.
