Poland not key to Lisbon Treaty: president

http://en.youth.cn   2009-06-30 14:36:00

Poland is not the key to the Lisbon Treaty, Polish President Lech Kaczynski said on June 29 at a meeting with diplomats.

Kaczynski, who has been frequently urged to sign the act, has said he would only do so after Ireland and Germany accept it. In Poland the Treaty only needs the president's signature to be adopted.

"Let us state this clearly. There are currently two keys to the treaty. One is Germany, where the Constitutional Tribunal will decide the matter, the other is the Irish people," Kaczynski was quoted as saying by the Polish news agency PAP.

He added that he was ready to sign the act once Germany and Ireland accept it.

The Lisbon Treaty was designed to boost the EU's global standing through reforming its institutions. But its ratification was stalled as Irish voters rejected the pact in June 2008. The treaty will take effect only after all 27 EU members ratify it.
