A 100-member delegation from Yale University is visiting Xi'an, an historical city in Northwest China's Shaanxi province. The delegation was invited by President Hu Jintao. They've visited over 30 families in the area.

Tammy is American, and Carolina Ecuadorian. Both are graduate students at Yale. They were visiting a local student, Yaqi, at her home.

Exchanging gifts was only the prelude. After a kung fu movie and some tea, the guests had a chance to marvel at the porcelain collection of Yaqi's father.

Liu Yaqi, student Xi'an Int'l studies University, said, "The horse dates back to the Tang Dynasty, which was hundreds of years ago."

A bigger surprise came from Yaqi's mother, who presented the guests with some newly bought clothes in traditional Chinese style. They were so eager to try these on, and didn't even bother to take off the price tags.

Although Tammy and Carolina had only learned to use chopsticks a few days ago, their new skills came in handy: the two are fascinated with local snacks.

" I like it. It is spicy, but it's delicious."

But no trip to a foreign place can be complete without a jaunt to the souvenir market. There, the pair picked up nice tea sets. And a walk on the city's famed ancient wall concluded the visit. Though the day's schedule may have ended, for Tammy and Carolina, their understanding of China has only just begun.

Tammy Yahner, student Yale University, said, "People here want to establish friendship with us. I hope the friendship can last and help improve the relations between the two countries."

Carolina Zambrano Barragan, student, Yale University, said, "I have the same feelings. We've met some very nice people here. And we have common values. That's the most important."

"I love China."
