BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao said on Thursday the central government will "unswervingly" support the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government and its development of democracy in accordance with the law.

Li made the remarks when he met with a visiting delegation of youth leaders from Hong Kong.

Li said the principle of "one country, two systems" has been proved a success as Hong Kong has maintained prosperity and stability since its return to the motherland 16 years ago.

He said the central government will unswervingly support the chief executive and the HKSAR government in governance according to the law. The central authorities will also unswervingly support Hong Kong in developing democracy in conformity with the Basic Law and relevant resolutions of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

Li said he hoped youth leaders could set examples in safeguarding Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability, promote patriotism among young people in Hong Kong, and lead them to participate in national development and supporting the governance of the HKSAR government.
