In order to integrate into Asia, Russia must develop the Far East. The development of the Far East will be a new economic growth point for Russia. The industries of energy and mineral resources are the foundation for development of the Far East. Agriculture and breeding industry have great potentials in the region too. The new Asia-Europe route via the Far East enables Russia to control the new transportation and economic channel.
Russia also faces obstacles in development of the Far East. In contrast to APEC venue, the downtown of Vladivostok is old and decays. The roads are less than satisfactory and many streets do not have streetlights in the city.
How to position itself in a right way is an issue that Russia must consider in integration into Asia. Russia is trying to act like a large developed European country in Asia. Russia's role of the raw material provider in Asia can be replaced by not only the Middle East, Central Asian and African countries but also such developed countries as Australia. Russia's eastward movement strategy is wise, but only if Russia seizes the opportunity will it get a brand-new life.
