Unknown gunmen shot and killed Chairman of Provincial Council in the eastern Afghan province of Ghazni Wednesday evening, a provincial official said.

"Chairman of Provincial Council Qazi Sahib Shah was killed when gunmen driving a car opened fire on him at around 6 p.m. local time in fifth sub-district of provincial capital of Ghazni city," deputy provincial governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi told Xinhua.

He said Shah died of bullets wounds shortly after the shooting and the attackers escaped the scene while police has launched an investigation and manhunt operation to capture the culprits.

No group has claimed the responsibility for the attack so far.

Violence has been on the rise since Taliban insurgents launched an annual spring offensive on May 3. The Taliban warned people against supporting government and foreign troops.

Taliban killed Provincial Chief Prosecutor Sayed Sahar Gul in Ghazni city on July 8 this year.

A total of 255 civilians were killed and 101 others injured in the targeted killing carried out by Taliban and other insurgent groups in the first six months of 2012, according to a UN report issued in capital city of Kabul earlier this month.
