"The Expendables 2" has remained atop the North America box office for two weeks in a row, thanks to star power and good word of buzz surrounding the ensemble-cast actioner, distributor Liongsgate said on Sunday.
The raunchy flick, which features an ensemble cast headed by Sylvester Stallone and included Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Blues Willis, is estimated to rope in 13. 5 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales. The action-packed sequel is on track for a 52.3 million dollar weekend during 10 days since it hit the theaters, according to Liongsgate.
"The Bourne Legacy," the fourth installment on the popular Universal franchise which has been in exhibition for three weeks, sustained a 46 percent drop from last week, garnering 9.3 million dollars in ticket stubs for a 85.5 million dollar cumulative receipt.
"ParaNorman" remained in No. 3 slot, taking in 8.5 million dollars during the Friday-through-Sunday period. The stop-action animated film, distributed by Focus Features, will amass 28.3 million dollars over 10 days.
"Campaign," a Warner Bros. political comedy produced and starred by Will Ferrell, remained in No. 4 slot with an estimated 7.4 million dollar weekend. Ferrell's latest vehicle is on track for a 64.5 million dollar three-week total.
"The Dark Knight Rises," Warner Bros. action epic, kept its No. 5 slot this weekend, taking in 7.2 million dollars. It has grossed 422.2 million dollars in receipts since it debuted in North America six weeks ago.
"Premium Rush," a Columbia Pictures action film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, premiered with 6.3 million dollars as the No. 7 most-popular film in North America this weekend.
The film is followed by anti-Obama documentary "2016 Obama's America" (6.2 million dollars). The conservative documentary, distributed by Rock Mountain Pictures and has been screened for seven weeks, is expected to outperform the distributor's another political flick "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed." The 2008 documentary film grossed 7.7 million dollars during its exhibition.
