Liao Dan, who defrauded Beijing Hospital with fake receipts for his wife's kidney illness, returned the stolen money to Dongcheng District Court on Monday. His action will probably reduce about 30 percent of his prison term, the Beijing Times reports.
With the help of an entrepreneur named Chen Lihao, Liao on Monday returned 172,000 yuan (27,000 US dollars) to the hospital for the treatment of his wife who was suffering from uremia and needed dialysis
"I'm sorry for Beijing Hospital, I just want my wife not to die, but to go on living." Liao, 41, said, "Now, I feel relaxed after I returned the money, and I am waiting for the court's decision."
Liao's lawyer, Wang Xu says Liao may have the opportunity to receive probation, since he has returned all the money.
His wife Du Jinling, from Hebei Province, had temporary jobs in Beijing before she got ill. She underwent dialysis treatments at the hospital twice weekly since June 2007. The cost of each treatment was 420 yuan.
The couple are laid-off workers and receiving the government minimum living allowance of 1,784 yuan a month. The community office has applied for medical assistance for his wife.
After the matter was reported by the media, China Social Assistance Foundation continued to receive donations totaling nearly 400 thousand yuan, which will be used for Du Jinling's future dialysis treatments.
It is not yet clear whether Liao's government allowance will be revoked because of his donations.
"We will handle this matter carefully," said a man surnamed Zhang, a staff worker at Liu Litun community office in Chaoyang District where Liao's family lives.
