BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) has been forced to rename its new operating system BBX as "BlackBerry 10" following the granting of a restraining order on Tuesday by a federal court, according to media reports on Thursday.

RIM said earlier in a statement that BlackBerry 10 will be the new brand name for its next generation mobile platform.

A U.S. federal court judge in Albuquerque, New Mexico, banned RIM from using the BBX name after finding that a small Albuquerque-based software maker, Basis International, has used the name BBx for 26 years.

“The BlackBerry 10 name reflects the significance of the new platform and will leverage the global strength of the BlackBerry brand while also aligning perfectly with RIM’s device branding,” RIM said in the statement.

The new phone operating system was developed by QNX Software Systems, a company based in Ottawa that RIM acquired last year.

BlackBerrys that run on the new operating system are expected to be released in 2012.
