An intoxicated college student driver fatally struck three pedestrians in downtown Guilin, South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region on Feb 2, Nanguo Morning Post reported.
Two men, including a renowned playwright, and a woman died at the scene, confirmed the municipal traffic bureau on Tuesday afternoon.
Liu Chang, the driver and student at Sichuan Normal University, was behind the wheel, drunk, of a Toyota SUV at 1:00 am, when he knocked down three pedestrians. Sobriety tests showed the alcohol content reached 149.36 mg/100 ml in his blood, far above China's 80mg threshold of drunk driving. He was also injured in the accident and was receiving medical treatment at a hospital under police supervision. Police said Liu also breached another road rule for speeding.
Two other people were in the car, both badly intoxicated.
The newspaper revealed that Liu's father is a judge at Xiangshan District People's Court in the city.
Yang Geping, 56, one of the three striken pedestrians, is the country's leading Gui opera (a genre of Guangxi local opera) dramatist. He's known for his work Da Ru Huan Xiang (Homebound Scholar).
