Former South African President Nelson Mandela was in good health despite being old.

"The former president continues to be in good health," presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said.

Mandela did not attend the African National Congress' centenary celebrations in the Mangaung municipality in the Free State early this month, giving rise to concern that the former president may be suffering from health problems.

Maharaj also said 94-year-old Mandela would return to Johannesburg on Sunday as routine "maintenance has to be undertaken at his Qunu home in the Eastern Cape."

"We once more appeal for his privacy and that of his family to be respected," said Maharaj.

Mandela moved to Qunu a few days before his 93rd birthday in July last year.

His quiet life in Qunu was disturbed when police discovered two hidden cameras spying on him.

The cameras were reportedly set up by Reuters and the Associated Press (AP) without the knowledge of the authorities.

Reuters and AP are facing criminal charges for allegedly contravening the National Key Points Act, under which all presidents' residences are declared national key points that cannot be filmed. AP said it set up the camera as a preparatory measure for Mandela's eventual passing.
